I love the Grange, William Wilkins’s great Greek Revival mansion in a secret valley outside Winchester. We have been going ever since we visited in 1978 when we wandered round the ruins in morning dress:
I remember when Wasfi Kani was considering where to open up a small-scale opera house in the mid-1990s. I like to think that I was one of the people who encouraged her to consider the Grange. Since then, we have gone every year, this year to Jules Massenet’s Don Quichotte. Unfortunately, it pelted with rain, so the house looked uncharacteristically glum. The valley of the Itchen was green:
