I thought that Hambleden was in Oxfordshire, but it turns out to be in the tail end of Buckinghamshire where it runs along the Thames: a village of unexpected picturesqueness, in a valley on its own, with a monument in the churchyard to the Kenricks, the local landowners, which was apparently sketched by Horace Walpole when he visited it in 1764:-
Hambleden is beautiful – willow trees, a lock and Mill. It features in Three Men in a Boat !
I remember the times I visited Hamblden many years ago. The mother of my friend had a cottage there and visited there from time time. I normally left Henley and walked along the Thames and through the flashing meadow to the cottage. On the way there was a pub called White Harte and the manor house owned by I think the proprietor of WH Smith. I don’t remember the monument Charles is talking about, but indeed the valley and wood there are memorable for their beauty.
