We had a Trustee meeting yesterday at Waddesdon. I have only ever seen the house in the summer, not cocooned for the winter:-
Best were the wine vaults, stuffed to the gunnels with Chateau Lafite:-
The meeting itself was held in the archive building on Windmill Hill, designed by Stephen Marshall, formerly of Munkenbeck + Marshall, the intelligent designer of the gallery at Roche Court:-
I had been particularly looking forward to seeing the Flint House, designed by Charlotte Skene-Catling in a style part rustic and part Ledoux, split in the middle between a guest house and the main building and with a roof which one can walk up and sit on, to survey the surrounding landscape:-
The landscape:-

What a feast ! Waddesdon (the most magnificent of the several fine Rothschild collections in and around Oxfordshire – Upton, Ascott and the Zoological Museum at Tring), Stephen Marshall’s gallery and Skene-Catling’s extraordinary Flint House, rightly declared The Building of theYear – all in one day !
