I’ve been intrigued several times recently by a grand, but deserted neo-Georgian building on Bow Common Lane, just south of the cemetery. What is it ? What was it ? Somewhere else it might have been a post office sorting centre, but not here. It’s not in Pevsner:-

Is it the gasworks? If you go on google maps you can see the footprint of the gasometers to the rear of the building. Also there is this piece of reminiscence by David Herbert Leaback in the East London History Society Record which has a map showing the area as remembered by the author http://www.mernick.org.uk/elhs/Record/ELHS%20RECORD%2012%20(1989).pdf
Might be completely wrong but thought it worth a mention.
