I arrived slightly early for a meeting in Clerkenwell yesterday, which gave me an opportunity to enjoy the area north of the church – a surprisingly well preserved set of narrow lanes, old brick tenement buildings and warehouses now turned into lofts and architects’ offices:-

If you’ve ever got time to spare in Clerkenwell then I’d recommend a visit to the Italian Church, St Peter’s, on Clerkenwell Road. As kids we used to go there for the Italian procession each July. It has a moving memorial to those who lost their lives on the Arandora Star when it sunk while transporting Italian internees to Canada in 1940.
