I had forgotten how redolent of Vanessa Bell’s paintings and personality the interiors of Charleston are, including the bedroom on the ground floor where she died on 7 April 1961 under a portrait of Julian from whose death she never wholly recovered:-

Your splendid photographs do justice to the way that Roger Fry designed the gardens, a provision of plants and colours – marguerites and astrantia .
Duncan Grant wrote to Vanessa Bell : you have “Genius in your life, as well as in your art “.
My sources say that he designed the structure of the garden, but not the actual planting. Charles
Thank you. I stand corrected. I hadn’t realised that she was influenced by Singer Sargent.
