Before Monteverdi, I walked down to the shore of the Thames, which is reached past the Mayflower and warehouses and was beautiful at dusk, the quiet of the river, with Tower Bridge in the distance and the Shard looming over it all:-

And at the Angel inn, still standing there, isolated by the riverside at Rotherhithe, Whistler painted his modern life Wapping, (National Gallery of Art, Washington), 1860 -64 . Looking, the other way towards Greenwich with more sail and more warehousing.
