The New NPG

I devoted my most recent monthly column in The Critic to the new look NPG, not a straightforward task because I spent quite a bit of my life on its previous reconfiguration and am still a great admirer of what Jeremy Dixon and Edward Jones did then; but what Jamie Fobert has done is pretty impressive, including, particularly, the grand new north entrance. I have also been impressed by the new re-hang on the top floor, widening the range of portraits more than I thought possible:-

My daughter was a member of the NPG Youth Forum at the time when the changes were being thought out and in the lead up to the closure. By one of those strange coincidences she ended up going to the re-opening party in her new role with a music organisation. She came home delighted by what had been achieved. I suspect this is especially true as she had experienced the cramped education facilities at the gallery. I remember visiting these for a celebration event when she did a week long course in association with the BP Portrait award. While clearly excellent work was being done, the surroundings weren’t the best.
