Making

Now that I’m back from Ireland, I have been watching a film which Joseph Walsh commissioned about Stone Vessel, which tells one a huge amount about the craft of making – church bells as well as building:-

    Thank you for posting this. I look forward to watching it. I am a huge fan of Pat Collins’ films and documentaries. I was so worried about losing access to his Henry Glassie: Fieldwork that I ended up buying a physical DVD of it. His film of John McGahern’s That They May Face The Rising Sun is very special indeed.

    My dear Charles, I was not prepared to be so moved by the film, but was overwhelmed at a number of occasions. I have personal connections to a couple of things within: We have a beautiful comfortable chair made by Joseph Walsh. It had been broken when we moved back from New York. I wrote to Mr. Walsh who was sad to see its sorry state, but referred us to a fine craftsman who had studied with him at his workshop. He was brilliant and it’s now just like new.

    We’ve met Rory at Ballymaloe and were lucky enough to have some of that fine food.

    And last but not for me least, “Appalachian Spring” always moves me to tears and I recognized it in the first few chords in the film. It was even more surprising to see the conductor was Teddy Abrams from Louisville. I’ve heard nothing but raves about him from my friends there and now know why. I think of the Louisville Orchestra as “my” orchestra. I was their official in-house photographer for 13 years, 1985-96. It was one of the greatest privileges of my photographic career to be able to work with all of those fine musicians. We built a relationship that allowed me to work inside the orchestra while they were rehearsing. I heard and met some of the greatest touring musicians of the world, and could be close enough to ‘hear the wood.’

    I have seen mention of the follow up film to this Making II – in fact it was shown on RTE the other night. But I can’t find any way of seeing it in the UK. All I can find is the trailer.

    If you have any knowledge of how it is possible to view it on this side of the Irish Sea I would be very grateful.
