I am completely ignorant of the architectural significance of Castle Howard. But being the age I am all I can think of when seeing these pictures is my 18 year old self watching Diana Quick, Jeremy Irons and co. in Brideshead Revisited. And I can hear Geoffrey Burgon’s soundtrack to that without even trying. Many years later I spent a week at Ampleforth Abbey writing up my PhD and realised what a beautiful part of the world this is.
Yes, Brideshead Revisited must have been filmed not long after I was doing research in the archive (September 1978/February 1979). Charles
