St. George’s Pool

I have been alerted to the new development planned to replace the old St. George’s Pool right next door to St. George-in-the-East, one of Hawksmoor’s great east end churches.

It sounds as if St. George’s Pool has been suffering in recent years in spite of being refurbished in 2012 and was closed during the pandemic. It was designed between 1965 and 1969 by Reginald Uren, an architect who was born and trained in New Zealand, came to London in 1929, won the competition to design Hornsey Town Hall in 1933 and worked with Charles Holden on the design of some of the stations on the Piccadilly line. In the 1950s, his firm, Slater, Uren and Pike, was responsible for the design of John Lewis and an extension to Peter Jones.
