One Pancras Square

I have only recently realised that the very Aldo Rossi-like building which greets one’s arrival to the increasingly impressive set of developments by Argent north of King’s Cross is by David Chipperfield.   With tubular cast iron columns, cast by the Hargreaves Foundry in Yorkshire, set out in a rigid rectilinear geometry, it could easily have come out of postwar Italy:-

  1. It is indeed extraordinary that David Chipperfield, despite his superb work in Europe (notably the Neues Musem in Berlin), is still rather under appreciated her in UK, notwithstanding his lovely River and Rowing Museum at Henley and his recent triumphs, with Margate and Wakefield. Let us hope that what he is about to achieve with 6 Burlington Gardens , for the RA, will get the British media finally to appreciate what a superb architect he is.

    • Yes, it’s his one and only project in Victoria Thornton’s Guide to Contemporary Architecture in London, although there are more in the latest edition of Ed Jones and Christopher Woodward’s Guide, including a private house by the Brompton Oratory.
