Walthamstow Town Hall

Walthamstow Town Hall looks uncannily like the Boijmans Museum, belonging to the same family of 1930s Scandinavian, stripped-down, civic classicism.    It was designed by Philip Dalton Hepworth who had been a student at the AA, had designed war memorials in the 1920s, and won the competition in 1932.   It opened in 1941.   Yesterday there was a rather wonderful Indian wedding, complete with horse and carriage:-

Many celebrated classical music recordings took place here in the main hall’s perfect acoustic, which is particular suited to the symphony orchestra. And the 40’s fixtures and fittings – door handles, lights etc are superb.

Like some other young people my son has recently moved to Walthamstow being priced out of central London .I`ve had to overcome prejudice and admit that there are some comely things about the area, not least the William Morris gallery and LLoyd park, now beautifully refurbished which lies just behind. I have thought the town Hall rather Stalinist but will now venture in to look at the door handles light fittings etc .
My son has also introduced me to` Walthamstow Village`an area lying to the south of the WM gallery and the town hall which is a half square mile of( mainly)pretty Victorian terraces rapidly being done up and gentrified . The main street has recently been pedestrianized and has a most pleasant atmosphere with cafes with tables outside and tempting looking restaurants .Rod Harper
