Caochangdi

The artists have moved nearby to Caochangdi, a rougher and more earthy area of industrial warehouses where Ai Weiwei has designed a large studio complex.

We wandered down the street:-

Past the police to Ai Weiwei’s own studio, where he lives and works when he’s in Beijing and which was built in 100 days in 1999.   He based the design on the local vernacular and his interest in the house by Ludwig Wittgenstein:-

    • Dear David, The we is a group of patrons of the RA plus me (see the entry on Hong Kong). Our hosts in the restaurant were its charming proprietors, who I wanted to record (not very well) for the excellence of the meal. And there has been no blowback to notice. I’ve even acquired three readers of my blog in mainland China. Charles
