We went to Melvyn Tan’s 60th. birthday concert at the Wigmore Hall in which he played Beethoven, Czerny and Liszt’s Piano Sonata in B minor, all examples of what the programme described as pianism (ie requiring playing of great technical virtuosity). He performed with appropriate and sometimes theatrical vim, enjoying his birthday with style.
Melvyn Tan has been reestablishing Czerny’s reputation for more than a year, seeing him as the link between Beethoven and Liszt. Tonight he convinced me. He’s a brilliant pianist who showed that Liszt’s B minor Sonata is a truly great, complex work. A memorable concert.
I agree about the Liszt, but need a bit more convincing that Czerny is not just about virtuosity for its own sake. Charles
