Henry, son of Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester, ‘led the van’ at the battle of Lewes (1264). This was of the decisive battles in our struggle for democracy, albeit then only in its infancy, with some of the King’s powers being taken by the Barons. An appropriate association with our borough.
