We love Beaumaris: a very English outpost in the southeast corner of Anglesey, as if it belongs to Liverpool or Bournemouth, more than Bangor, and with M Jones a’i Fab Antiques, one of the best antique shops anywhere, always a cabinet of Welsh country curiosities, collected on expeditions across north Wales and full of treen:-

It’s also now acquired an Italian/Welsh delicatessen which sells sausages, fruit and frog’s legs:-

Your brilliance at finding curious shops and notices never fails to amaze me.
British though Beaumaris might me, don’t pass over the horrors of its gaol. looming over the town. It was a horror. A ‘Separate System’ meant that prisoners worked, slept and ate in isolation, even being attached at intervals to a chain, to prevent contact. It had a treadmill.
Henry Mayhew called it ‘unwarrantably severe’. and even a Select Committee of the time wrote that ” The main elements of prison discipline are hard work, hard fare and a hard bed”. But we have no cause of be smug – slopping out only came to an end after Lord Woolf’s recent Report.
Yes, I haven’t seen it for years. It still survives, fairly intact. Charles
