We were fascinated by a picture of The Penrhyn Slate Quarry, the source of George Dawkins-Pennant’s great wealth, painted by Henry Hawkins (otherwise unknown) in 1832, the year of The Great Reform Bill, which Dawkins-Pennant opposed. It’s like a John Martin, but real:-

I haven’t been to this part of Wales but have visited he slate museum near Llanberis where, coincidentally, I used to accompany students to the Kent outdoor centre. And also coincidentally, I’ve just finished reading the biography of Georgina, Duchess of Bedford whose stepson ,Lord John Russell, introduced the Great Reform Bill. So, thank you for reviving some pleasant memories.
