St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral

St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral is quite wonderful, so surprising, not enormous, but full of restrained power.  You approach along the river and there it is, at the side of a minor street, almost like a toy:-

The interior is wonderful too, so well preserved, full of rich detail, all of it designed by William Burges:-

My eldest son is named Finnbar as not only was he born on that particular saints day but my dad was born and brought up in Cork City (he came over to Dagenham as a teenager to work at Fords). We are very proud of our Irish heritage and – of course – very grateful for the fact that my three children and I all hold Irish passports with all the EU rights those confer. I know I am biased but I do think that a Cork accent is the most beautiful thing.

I did not know about this glorious looking cathedral before your post. Ny husband and I like to have a pre Christmas break in a cathedral city and have exhausted most of the UK ones, so now have this one for next year. Plus an even better reason to visit Cork as not been there before either. Thanks so much Victoria
