I used to be able to post a link to articles I write for The Critic, but they are now behind a paywall. This month I have written about the work of the late Rick Mather, an architect I liked and respected, although did not employ for reasons given in the article.
One thing I had not registered at the time I wrote the article is that Mather’s former practice, now called MICA, is part of the team selected to design the new wing at the National Gallery. Everyone, including me, has treated Kengo Kuma as the sole architect of the project, but the involvement of MICA will mean that there are a number of people involved with a great deal of relevant experience, having worked on the big extension at the Ashmolean.
Not that Kengo Kuma himself does not have lots of experience of museum design, as demonstrated by V&A Dundee, the Bato Hiroshige Museum, the Nezu Museum in Tokyo and many others.
Here he is working on the Ashmolean;-
